SPENCER - Estherville Lincoln Central got its first taste of competition for the new season at the Spencer Invitational on Tuesday.
Led by Lee Christensen's third-place finish, the ELC boys finished fifth overall with 175 points. Christensen finished the 5K (3.1 miles) course in 17 minutes, 1 second.
Nic Peters finished 12th overall in 17:47.

Algona had a pair who finished 1-2-Bo Bjelle and Peter Hollinger-as the Bulldogs won the meet with 33 points.
Rounding out the team score for ELC, Tristan Fales finished 51st in 20:09, Evan Drew finished 53rd in 20:32 and Easton Gifford finished 56th in 21:56.
Also running, Drew Condon finished 69th in 22:14 and Michael Houseman finished 73rd in 22:52.
On the girls' side, ELC finished eighth with 202 points with Spencer winning the meet with 64 points as the Tigers had four runners in the top 15.
ELC was led by a pair of freshmen-Sydni Quastad finished 36th in 18:36 and Karly Hanson placed 37th in 18:37. Caressa Franklin placed 40th in 19:01 while Taylor Morris was 43rd in 19:19 and Colleen Humble was 46th in 19:21.
Also running, Taylor Karels finished 52nd in 19:23 and Melissa Gruwell finished 68th in 20:49.
"Our girls had a nice pack and we had six-seven girls very close at the first mile," said Burton. "We just need to get them closer to the front."
"As a whole, we're in a good position to do some work and improve," she said.
In junior varsity, ELC had five girls competing. Bailey Spiegler placed 35th in 21:23, Coral Franklin placed 42nd in 21:42, Mariajose Rodriguez finished 52nd in 22:43, Madi More placed 65th in 23:35 and Emilee Olson placed 66th in 24:18.
ELC had four boys running the junior varsity race. Marcus Smith placed 55th in 24:07, Reese Vedder placed 59th in 24:41, Toby Jensen placed 63rd in 25:30 and Ruben Marten placed 64th in 26:02.
