Thumbs up to Graettinger on another successful Labor Day celebration - the 118th this year. That says a lot about how a community can come together to celebrate its heritage.

Thumbs up to the Friends of Fort Defiance for a lot of work done again Tuesday. Members painted uprights on the picnic shelter, laid down fabric and spread crushed limestone and cut brush in the west parking lot. These are all projects that needed to be done and which will improve the overall appearance of the park.

Thumbs up to the Emmet County Wellness Coalition that met Wednesday to discuss upcoming projects that impact the health and wellness of everyone throughout Emmet County.

Thumbs up to Elevate Iowa which awarded the Estherville Public Library a grant for Tinker Tuesday, a STEM program to promote science, technology, engineering and math for youth in grades K-6. Estherville Public Library was one of 15 libraries/museums across the entire state of Iowa to receive the $500 grant. Participants in the program will have many hands-on-activities including experiments with science, art, technology and ideas to tinker with. With the grant money the library was able to purchase two Keva Plank Sets and three Snap Circuit Kits to be used with this program in addition to monthly tinkering projects. The library is partnering with Iowa Lakes Community College, Iowa Lakes Electric Cooperative, and GKN. Representatives from these businesses will come and present information on educational opportunities, technology used in their jobs, and may include hands-on-demonstrations.

Thumbs up to the Estherville firefighters who took the time to help raise money for the Muscular Dystrophy Association on Labor Day afternoon. Firefigthers raised $2,277 while collecting from passersby at the corner of Central Avenue and Fifth Street.

Thumbs up to Estherville Lincoln Central 2014 Fans of the Year Milton 'Doc' and Sharon Archer for their long-time support for ELC?athletics.

Thumbs up to POET-DSM's Project Liberty on its grand opening of its cellulosic ethanol plant in Emmetsburg. Fuel from the plant reportedly represents a greenhouse gas reduction of 85 to 95 percent over gasoline. Also, the plant will have a huge economic impact on the area and Iowa.
