Thumbs up, thumbs down

January 2, 2015
Estherville News

Thumbs up to falling gas prices. It's been at least six years since gas has been this low, and there's a definite economic benefit to everyone - especially with lower gas prices coming before Christmas. With gas under $2 for a long time, the extra money people spent for Christmas will undoubtedly help regenerate the economy.

Thumbs up to the Emmet County Board of Supervisors for holding not one but two board meetings this week on Tuesday and Friday. Old and new board members are studying every issue in depth and doing all they can for all the taxpayers of Emmet County. We laud their efforts and wish the board the best as it sets out upon its most difficult task of the year - grappling with the 2015-16 budget.

Thumbs up to Larry Lago, Dickinson and Emmet County Farm Service Agency executive director, who's planning farm program informational meetings for 2 p.m. Tuesday, Jan. 6 and Tuesday, Jan. 13 at Iowa Lakes Community College in Estherville. Meetings will also be held at 1:30 p.m. Thursday, Jan. 15 and Friday, Jan. 16 in Spirit Lake at the ISU Extension meeting room on the Dickinson County fairgrounds.

The meetings will include Price Losss Coverage (PLC) and Agricultural Risk Coverage (ARC) enrollment options that will be administered by the USDA Farm Service Agency (FSA) along with the Supplemental Coverage Option (SCO) that will be administered by the USDA Risk Management Agency through federal crop insurance providers.

We encourage ag producers to attend and get all the information they can before making important decisions about how they can protect their crops and pricing.
