Thumbs up, thumbs down

April 3, 2015
Estherville News

Thumbs up to officer Dave Handeland on his retirement from the Estherville Police Department. Public safety can be a trying occupation - and yet extremely rewarding. Here's hoping Officer Handeland has only fond memories of the rewards of serving the people of Estherville.

Thumbs up to Dist. 4 U.S. Rep. Steve King for visiting Emmet County Monday. Congressman King has a sincere interest in serving all the residents of the 4th District, and we appreciate his service.

Thumbs up to Estherville Lincoln Central for taking the D.A.R.E. pledge to avoid drugs, tobacco and alcohol. This is a very important step in their lives, and one we hope they remember.

Thumbs up to Mary Prentice, who recently joined Great Lakes Insurance at 500 Central Avenue.

Thumbs up to Hoyer Chiropractic on the move to their new location at 21 S.

Sixth St., former location of Q Custom Designs.

Thumbs up to the Avera Holy Family Foundation as it plans its annual Wholly Grape & Ale fundraiser. This year's theme is Wild, Wild West. The event will be held 5-9 p.m. Friday, April 10 at Estherville Golf Course. Sample wines and domestic and imported ales will be available, along with a host of hors d'oeuvres'. Contact Sandy Lunning at 712-362-6132 or email sandy.lunning@avera.org for tickets.

Thumbs up to the Emmet County Nature Center Foundation as it plans its annual banquet 5:30 p.m. Saturday, April 11 at the Estherville Elks Lodge. Funds go toward nature education, a very important part of the overall development of youth in Emmet County. For tickets, call 712-867-4422 or talk to any Emmet County Nature Center Foundation member.

Thumbs up to our area firefighters for acting quickly to suppress fires near Wallingford and near Estherville early this week. We can't stress enough how dry conditions are, and discourage any use at all whatsoever of controlled burning or outdoor fireplaces. It's way too dry out there, folks, so please be careful.

Thumbs up to everyone who works to make this a safe and happy Easter weekend. We wish everyone the best and hope you have a safe trip wherever you're going. And whatever you do, make sure to have a happy Easter!
