SIOUX CITY - Estherville Lincoln Central's young softball team gained some good experience against quality competition at a tournament in Sioux City this past Friday and Saturday.

ELC coach Megan Anderson felt her team played better than their 1-3 record over the two-day event.

"I felt the scores were not the complete story-the kids battled all weekend and we saw one of the best pitchers in the state against Lawton-Bronson," she said. "We've got a lot of little things to work on. We have some young kids that just have to mature a bit."

On Friday, ELC suffered losses to Council Bluffs Lewis Central (10-6) and Bishop Heelan (13-4).

Carson Gjerde started the first game on the mound, but wasn't feeling well and left after two innings. She gave up two hits. Olivia Truog closed out the game with two strikeouts and seven walks.

Gjerde managed to go 2-3 at the plate before leaving while Caitlyn Clayton was 2-2 and Lindsey Jensen was 2-3 with an RBI.

Morgan White struggled against Heelan with 11 walks to just two strikeouts through four complete innings. Truog walked three of the five batters she faced.

At the plate, Megan Jensen was 1-2 with an RBI while Gjerde, Alyssa Friesner, Caitlyn Clayton and Karmen Hazen each had one hit.

On Saturday, ELC defeated Lawton-Bronson 9-4. With Gjerde back on the mound, she went all seven innings and struck out three while giving up three walks. At the plate, Friesner was 3-4 with a double and an RBI while White was 2-4 with a double and three RBI. Megan Jensen and Clayton each had a hit and an RBI.

In the final game for ELC, the Midgets fought a seesaw battle with Sergeant Bluff-Luton and came up short 9-7.

Gjerde again took the mound, striking out five and walking three. She was 2-4 at the plate with two RBI. Friesner also was 2-4 while Gabby Heckard was 2-3 with an RBI and Megan Jensen was 1-4 and scored twice.

ELC (3-3 overall) is at home against Cherokee this evening and on the road against Western Christian on Wednesday.
