Emmet County residents overwhelming elected Amy Sathoff as the new auditor in a special election on Tuesday.

The election was held to fill the position vacated by Mikki Erickson, who retired in April.

Sathoff, a Democrat, won by more than a 2-to-1 margin with 482 votes, compared to 203 received by Republican candidate Amy Brickner.

"I want to say thank you to all those who voted for me," said Sathoff. "I also want to thank family and friends who went door to door, put up signs and supported me all around."

Only six precincts were used in this election with Estherville residents voting at the Masonic Temple. Sathoff won in every precinct and in absentee balloting-in Armstrong (107 to 25); in Dolliver (23 to 9); in Estherville (180 to 110); in Gruver (19 to 10); in Ringsted (46 to 10); in Wallingford (32 to 16) and absentee (75 to 17).

Sathoff has been an assistant auditor within the Emmet County Auditor's office.
