Adding something to the garden

The beauty of a garden is that it can be a flower garden, a vegetable garden or a combination of both. It can be tiny or it can be huge. It can have potatoes and green peppers or it can have marigolds and tomatoes. It doesn't always have to have straight rows or be in a perfect rectangle. Every garden has its own purpose.

David Brooks, an OP-ED columnist for The New York Times recently published a column in which he had asked readers to send in essays describing their purpose in life and how they found it. One of the most common themes from readers did not include wealth or changing the world, it was simply the pursuit of the small, happy life.

One reader sent in saying her purpose used to be seeing patients and saving lives. Now it's more than just that, it's being the person who picks up the phone and gives 30 minutes to someone in crisis or looking that person in the eye and giving them a few dollars in the parking lot.

Another reader told the story about a man she had heard about in which his most prized possession was a banged up tin pot that he kept carefully wrapped in cloth. The message, the man said, was that 'we do not all have to shine.'

Sometimes people are looking for this monumental purpose to their lives, but not everyone has a monumental purpose that involves changing the world. Perhaps your purpose is to raise kind children or care for those less fortunate or simply to be the ear someone needs, which is equally as important.

In today's world, there is a lot of bad, but with that there is a lot of good. Everyone has an opportunity to be part of that good and make a difference in their own lives as well as someone else's.

That's the beauty of a garden; there are no size requirements and not every plant serves the same purpose, yet each one adds something different, big or small, to the garden.
