ELC extends streak to six games

Big hits highlight day for Midgets

SPIRIT?LAKE - After Spencer halted Estherville Lincoln Central's five-game winning streak last Monday, the Midgets have responded with six straight victories including three on Saturday at the Spirit Lake Tournament.

The Midgets defeated Kingsley-Pierson 6-2, Sioux City West 18-2 in three innings and Central Lyon/George-Little Rock 7-1.

"I don't think we had more than a couple errors all day at Spirit Lake," said ELC coach Megan Anderson. "We're playing well and hitting the ball well."

Carson Gjerde pitched all seven innings against Kingsley-Pierson and gave up six hits with two strikeouts and six walks.

At the plate, Karmen Hazen was 3-for-3 with a double and a run while Megan Jensen was 2-for-3 with two RBI and a run and Gjerde was 2-for-4 with a double and an RBI. Alyssa Friesner and Lindsey Jensen each went 1-for-3 with an RBI while Gwen Schutjer was 1-for-2.

The highlight for ELC against Sioux City West was a grand slam by Morgan White in the second inning. She finished 1-for-3 at the plate with four RBI and scored twice.

"Their pitcher struggled with lots of walks,"-for-2 with three RBI and two runs while Caitlyn Clayton was 1-for-1 and scored three times and Megan Jensen was 1-for-2 with an RBI and a run.

In the final game of the day, ELC took advantage of several throwing errors by Central Lyon/George-Little Rock, according to coach Anderson.

White earned the win on the mound as she pitched five innings and gave up five hits with three strikeouts and four walks. Gjerde pitched two innings and recorded two strikeouts with one walk and no hits.

At the plate, Gjerde went 3-for-3 with two doubles and scored twice. Schutjer and White each went 1-for-4 and scored a run while Lindsey Jensen was 1-for-3. Schutjer also had an RBI.

ELC (14-4 overall) is on the road the first three games of the week-at Le Mars on Monday, Cherokee on Wednesday and Bishop Garrigan in Algona on Thursday.
