In a rubber match against Spencer, Estherville Lincoln Central came ready to play on Wednesday.

Class 3A No. 15 ELC had won the first meeting 4-1 at the Midgets' home tournament on June 6. When the teams met two days later, Spencer edged ELC 6-5 in nine innings.

On this night, ELC gave up an early run and came back with three runs in the bottom of the first, never trailing in the 8-2 victory.

A two-run home run by Carson Gjerde that bounced off the top of the left field fence in the fourth inning highlighted ELC's offensive night, which included 11 hits.

ELC's scoring started with leadoff batter Megan Jensen, who was hit by a pitch. A bunt single by Gjerde turned into a run as Jensen scored from first on a Tiger throwing error. Morgan White followed with an RBI single. One out later, Gwen Schutjer singled to drive in Gjerde as ELC led 3-1.

In the fourth inning, Lindsey Jensen drew a leadoff walk. Courtesy runner Sydni Quastad moved to second on a sacrifice bunt by Hallie Jensen. Megan Jensen followed with a double to bring in Quastad. That set up Gjerde's home run.

After Spencer answered with a two-out run in the top of the fifth, ELC added a pair of insurance runs in the sixth. Hallie Jensen led off with a single. After two fly balls to center, with Jensen advancing to second on a poor throw in from the outfield to first base, a double by Morgan White to right-center field brought in one run. Alyssa Friesner followed with a single up the middle to complete the scoring.

Gjerde earned the win on the mound as she struck out five and walked none.

At the plate, White was 3-for-4 with two RBI, Gjerde was 2-for-4 with three RBI, Megan Jensen was 2-for-3 with an RBI, Caitlyn Clayton and Hallie Jensen each were 1-for-2 and Friesner and Schutjer each were 1-for-4 with an RBI.

ELC (20-5 overall) hosted Spencer on Wednesday. The Midgets are at Spirit Lake tonight. ELC travels to the Spencer Tournament Friday and Saturday.

ELC plays North Union at 1:45 p.m. and Denison-Schleswig at 5:15 p.m. Friday. On Saturday, the Midgets play Marcus-Meriden-Cleghorn/Remsen-Union at 10 a.m.
