July is National Picnic Month

June 28, 2015

Some days the sun beats down its heat, and some days are too overcast or rainy. Sometimes the bugs win. A picnic seems like the perfect time to get everyone off their devices and enjoy the parks or waterfront or your own backyard.

There's nothing wrong with planning your outing on social media, though. There's a party on Twitter called #PackAPicnic on July 15, hosted by Produce for Kids. You can join the discussion on Twitter at that hashtag to get picnic tips and recipes, and have the chance to win prizes.

Estherville's Downtown Market on Thursday nights has local vendors offering produce and pies to create an amazing picnic meal for the weekend. The Saturday morning Farmer's Market offers even more.

In the South, it's popular to have cold leftovers in a picnic basket cold fried chicken, fried pies, even fried greens that have been cooled, with a big thermos of lemonade or iced sweet tea.

It can be as simple as a loaf of French bread, lunchmeat, cheese, condiments just break off a hunk of the French bread and slap on the toppings you want. Throw in a few drinks and some cookies from the pantry, fresh fruit, and you're on your way most anywhere.

It can be as simple as cheese and crackers, bologna on white, or pb&j if necessary, but it might be fun to try more adventurous portable food.

A picnic can take the pressure off if you want to have guests for dinner. It's light and generally filled with foods that appeal to everyone. Heat, according to Mark Bitner's Picnic 101 list in the now-defunct Diner's Journal of the New York Times, is what separates a picnic from a cookout or barbecue. If it's hot, and especially if cooked on site, it's no longer a picnic.

Enjoy National Picnic Month by getting out and taking in delicious cold food.
