Hidden talent?

July 22, 2015
Estherville News

Friday night is the Bill Riley Talent Show at the Emmet County Fair. It will be great to see who signs up, and don't misunderstand-there's nothing wrong with a well-belted ballad or the cool dance number from the spring recital. But what if over the hills and fields of our region there's also a fire dancer, a martial arts master, a harmonica guru, a budding standup comedian, a slamming performance poet, a righteous tumbler, or an awe-inspiring illusionist?

We recently noticed a quote from Dave Grohl of the band Foo Fighters, formerly from Nirvana:

"When I think about kids watching a TV show like "American Idol" or "The Voice", then they think, 'Oh, okay, that's how you become a musician, you stand in line for eight hours with 800 people at a convention centre and then you sing your heart out for someone and then they tell you it's not good enough.' Can you imagine?"

Grohl continues:

"It's destroying the next generation of musicians! Musicians should go to a yard sale and buy an old drum set and get in their garage and just suck. And get their friends to come in and they'll suck, too. And then they'll start playing and they'll have the best time they've ever had in their lives and then all of a sudden they'll become Nirvana. Because that's exactly what happened with Nirvana. Just a bunch of guys that had some old instruments and they got together and started playing some noisy [redacted] and they became the biggest band in the world. That can happen again! You don't need a computer or the Internet or The Voice or American Idol ."

Whatever happens at this or any talent search, it's important to love what you do. When you give it your all, it's not a waste of time, and if it's not that great in one moment or one performance on one day, you have the choice to hang it up or keep trying. It seems the ones who make it in performing or in anything are the ones who don't give up.
