Ask a Trooper

Topic: License Plate Bingo

August 19, 2015
Trooper Vince Kurtz , Estherville News

Q: This week's #askatrooper question comes from @tehra_drost referring to the picture, at right: (Submitted via Twitter)

@TrooperkurtzWhat NOT to do?

A: Thank you, @tehra_drost, for the interesting question. Our readers may have seen this around town and wondered, 'Why is there more than one registration sticker on that guy's car. Am I missing one?'

Several years ago, Iowa did issue two validation stickers that were to be affixed to the rear plate. One was for the year of expiration, while the second was for the month. The Iowa DOT now issues one sticker, including both the year and month of expiration together.

This migration to the one-sticker system requires motorists to remove expired stickers and replace them with the new sticker that comes with your registration card. (321.34)

Here are several other code sections that relate to this topic

n The validation sticker is to be placed in the lower left hand corner of the rear license plate. For Natural Resource plates, the sticker may be placed in the lower right corner. (321.34)

n Vehicles registered in Iowa are required to display a front and rear license plate. (321.37)

n Both license plates are required to be securely mounted on the front and rear of the vehicle, respectively. (321.38)

n License plates should be mounted no lower than 12 inches from the ground. Keep them free from debris and legible at all times. (321.38)

A violation of these code sections all carry an $87 fine. Take some time to look over your license plates today, and don't be that guy playing license plate bingo. ?
