The Autumnal Equinox -- Try not to fall out of balance

We just passed the autumnal equinox the point between summer and winter, a day of balance as it falls between the longest and the shortest days of the year and here in the northern hemisphere, we spend exactly as much time in sunlight as we do under the moon. The equinox has been celebrated since the time of ancient Egypt; the sphinx was built to point toward the sun on the day of autumnal equinox.

As a staff, we have covered a lot of fall kickoffs and new beginnings in the last month, from the first day of school and activities to the new season of responsibilities and events that take a summer break.

With the balanced days, we can try to strike a balance in our lives and the ways in which we spend our time. Shrinking daylight will give us less time with each passing day to accomplish what we need to before dark. Yet there's no reason to be in a hurry as that just trips us up.

Frances Booth, author of The Distraction Trap: how to Focus in a Digital World, created four questions to ask yourself if you think you're falling out of balance between life and work.

Do you feel like you are in balance or out of balance right now?

If you're out of balance, what do you need to do to shift towards balance?

What do you need to do more of?

What do you need to do less of?

In this digital age where we're constantly plugged in to work and other demands, it's tempting to check work email in the evenings, to answer that text, to log in and see what's going on. It's an easy way to get out of balance with relationships, and with simply having time for what we really want to do. Work is one period of life, and it can be very rewarding. But life happens out there in the big world. We hope you'll all snap off a piece of that during this season.
