Estherville News

An investigation continues into the Thursday death of a prisoner at the Emmet County Jail Estherville.

In a press release sent Friday, Emmet County Sheriff reported the prisoner was found unresponsive in the jail around 8 a.m., Thursday.

Staff immediately began rendering first aid. The prisoner was transferred to Avera Holy Family Hospital in Estherville by the Estherville Ambulance Service where he was later pronounced dead.

The prisoner is identified at 51-year-old Lee Roy Hum of Estherville. Hum had been arrested and booked into the Emmet County Jail on Wednesday afternoon on an outstanding Emmet County arrest warrant.

The Iowa Division of Criminal Investigation, the Emmet County Medical Examiner's Office and the Emmet County Sheriff's Office are currently investigating the incident.

An autopsy performed Friday showed "no significant injury," according to the Iowa Medical Examiner's Office in Ankeny. Investigators say a cause of death is still pending, and they await the results of additional lab tests.
