Removing clutter

Spring is getting closer and that means it's time for some spring cleaning, especially for those sections of the house that seem to be a catchall for anything and everything. Whether it is the spare bedroom or the garage, removing clutter and unneeded items can leave you feeling refreshed and ready for the summer.

If you are feeling overwhelmed already and have not even started, remember these three tips.

1. Give yourself enough time. Unless your catchall room is already in relatively good shape, it may take longer than a couple hours to conquer the stacks of boxes and papers and extra furniture that have accumulated over the past winter. It's important to give yourself enough time to assess your storage situation and then put together a plan that outlines where the items should go and how much you want to spend on new storage materials.

2. Be open to donating. If you plan on having a garage sale, then that may be a good way to rid your home of items no longer needed. However, if you don't plan to have a garage sale or want to get rid of items sooner, consider donating them. Whether the Salvation Army, Goodwill or another organization, donating items not only helps you to gain back space in your home, it also gives those families that may not have a lot to spend an opportunity to buy something they may need or may not normally be able to afford.

3. Recruit friends and family to help. The more hands you have, the faster you can conquer the daunting task of cleaning out that overfilled storage room. Have a list of tasks or responsibilities ready for your helpers in order to maximize yours and their time.

Organizing those packed storage rooms and ridding your home of unneeded items can leave you feeling refreshed, accomplished and ready to tackle those of spring tasks.
