Happy Father’s Day

In case it snuck up on you, Sunday is Father's Day-a day to celebrate dad's, grandpas and great-grandpas.

I personally jumped into fatherhood with both feet in marrying a lovely person with three children of her own-Dillon, Danica and Delaney.

It took just a little more than a month when the youngest first started calling me "daddy." The others soon followed suit.

I feel it's taken me a while to get up to speed on being a dad. I was fortunate to have a good teacher in my own father.

A dairy farmer, I learned about hard work and working every day. That's one lesson I feel is easier to teach on the farm where the children grow up around constant activity.

It's challenges of accomplishing the same goals with a life in town.

But that's not what I wanted to talk about. I like to focus more on some of the joys of being a father.

Having added Zoey to the family nearly three years ago has helped the family come together.

Despite my sarcastic comments to my wife about having such "an unhappy child," she smiles and laughs more than the rest of us and gives us joy as well.

I'm sure that parents enjoy hearing their children begin to speak.

I remember the first argument with Zoey about whether we should go home on our "walk" or keep walking.

Now she says new words daily prompting exclamations from other family members like, "I didn't know she knew that word."

Fortunately, none of her words have been naught, but it's hard not to smile when she sticks out her tongue and spits out a "raspberry."

As with most fathers, I've learned how to change a "poopy" diaper and though I don't remember playing dress up with dolls, I help my youngest dress up every day.

Yes, being a dad can be a daunting task. There are many days where I feel I come up short, as all parents must feel. But as long as we have another day, we keep trying.
