SHELDON - The Estherville Lincoln Central boys placed 10th and the girls placed 11th as the Midgets ran on the Sheldon Invitational on Tuesday.

"For the first time in a long time the Sheldon meet was not held on the golf course. It was held at the Northwestern Community College campus," said ELC coach Tina Burton. "The runners weren't too excited about the layout of the course but I was happy that they all went about their business and put their best effort forward. We talked about having a positive attitude about competition even though they weren't having positive attitudes about the change. I believe they all tried their best to make sure that it was more about being competitive."

Kevin Dong and Taylor Myers continue to lead the ELC boys with both placing in the Top 20. Dong placed 12th in 17 minutes, 55.40 seconds while Myers placed 19th in 18:18.42.

"Kevin continues to show improvement in his confidence and ability to run with the front of the pack," said Burton. "He and Taylor Myers do a very good job of challenging themselves and putting themselves out towards the front. We talk about making sure we are in position and then we worry about competing and these two make sure not to lose touch with those top runners. It's exciting to see them hungry for a top spot. I enjoy the beginning of the race knowing that they are going to work from the front half of the pack and race."

Rounding out the ELC team score, Drew Condon placed 80th in 20:17.25 with Ethan Traff placing 86th in 20:34.29 and Jacob Jensen placed 96th in 21:15.34. Also running for ELC, Marcus Smith placed 99th in 21:28.83 and Jose Saavedra placed 109th in 22:54.22.

Riley Christoffer led the ELC girls, placing 34th in 2318.80 with Karley Hanson close behind in 36th in 23:23.39.

"Taylor Morris continues to impress me," said coach Burton. "She has had some lower leg issues that cause her some discomfort but what Coach (Connie) Humble and I are most impressed about is that she battles everyday. I know she is hurting in a race but she just continues to keep going. It's not easy hurting but she wants to run. I've been really impressed with her ability to keep doing what she is doing."

Rounding out ELC's scoring, taylor Morris placed 62nd in 25:07.49, Madison Burton placed 68th in 25:32.34 and Laura Humble placed 73rd in 26:04.64. Also running, Melissa Gruwell placed 77th in 26:37 and Kylie Quastad placed 78th in 26:43.05.

"As a collective whole we probably got swallowed up early by a pack," said coach Burton. "The varsity ladies had beautiful starts but when they filtered through the first mile I think it was hard for them to stay into position and we got caught too far back. It's hard to play catch up, but they all worked hard nonetheless. These girls jockey positions in meets one will be fourth one meet and then they might be seventh the next. But what I can guarantee is that they all work hard in practice. I've never had to wonder if they are trying their hardest, because I know they do. "

In the junior varsity boys' race, Chaz Berge placed 133rd in 28:15.84 and Toby Jensen placed 135th in 28:22.07.

In the junior varsity girls race, Bailey Spiegeler placed 36th in 27:24.80, Vanessa Vedder placed 57th in 29:12.03 and Maggie Rezac placed 59th in 29:14.73.
