ARMSTRONG - North Union couldn't have asked for a better start to its homecoming.

The Warrior defense forced visiting Hartley-Melvin-Sanborn on the Hawks' first drive, tackling for losses and forcing a punt on fourth-and-long.

The short punt allowed North Union to go to work at the Hawk 48-yard line.

On the Warriors' first play from scrimmage, Derek Thompson busted through the line of scrimmage and found a hole big enough to go all 48 yards to the end zone.

While the extra point kick missed, North Union had a 6-0 lead.

However, the Warriors could do little the rest of the night offensively. HMS would tie the game later in the first quarter and then score twice in the final period to pull out the 20-6 victory.

The tying score came when HMS' Ivan Abonce picked up a Warrior fumble and went 73 yards. That came with 3:40 left in the first.

The two teams battled up and down the field with North Union driving deep into Hawk territory two different times.

With a couple minutes left in the half, Trent Pedersen blocked a Hawk punt as North Union took over on the 27-yard line. But after converting a fourth-and-1, The Hawk defense came up big, intercepting an Elliott Hagebock pass in the end zone.

Thompson finished with 82 yards rushing while Isaac Engeman had 40 yards on the ground. Hagebock finished 5-of-14 passing for 39 yards.

North Union (1-4 overall, 0-3 in district play) hosts Marcus-Meriden-Cleghorn/Remsen-Union this Friday.
