EAGLE GROVE - The Estherville Lincoln Central girls and boys cross country teams both ran to sixth place at the Dick Bell Invitational at Eagle Grove on Tuesday.

"It's a hilly course so our runners have a love hate relationship with those kinds of courses," said ELC coach Tina Burton. "They know they can run on a hilly course well but they also know it's going to be work. We have practiced hills several times, and having our own meet they got cheated out of having a hilly meet, so mentally they may not have been as prepared since we hadn't ran our meet. However, the practice on our course did set them up to know that they are capable of competing on a tougher course."

Riley Christoffer led the ELC girls again as she placed 23rd in 22 minutes, 14.54 seconds. Karley Hanson took 30th in 22:58.21 followed by Taylor Morris in 37th in 23:13.72 while Laura Humble placed 51st in 24:14.52 and Kylie Quastad placed 56th in 24:40.96.

"Riley continues to prove that she wants to run with the front of the pack," said Burton. "She started off strong with teammates Taylor Morris and Karley Hanson. She showed she was able to move herself closer to the front and maintain a great pace."

Also running for ELC, Bailey Spiegeler placed 66th in 25:31.28, Melissa Gruwell placed 67th in 25:45.08, Vanessa Vedder placed 68th in 25:45.089, Maggie Rezac placed 80th in 26:49.42, Madi Burton placed 95th in 27:59.33 and Erika Olson placed 104th in 28:40.56.

Kevin Dong again led the ELC boys as he placed 16th in 17:47.51. Taylor Myers placed 30th in 18:37.50, Riley Theesfeld placed 50th in 19:20.84, Ethan Traff placed 58th in 19:58.64 and Drew Condon placed 78th in 20:15.78.

"Kevin Dong continues to improve and is running smarter," said coach Burton. "He has big goals. Keeping him dialed in to having fun in the sport first has been a priority. Then we work on race strategy and practice components that will help out. I certainly hope coming into the next two weeks he can keep his mind in the things he needs to do right so that the outcome is exactly what he wants."

Also for Estherville, Jacob Jensen placed 88th in 20:39.50, Marcus Smith placed 91st in 20:42.12, Jose Saavedra placed 131st in 22:27.84, Chaz Berge placed 138th in 22:59.07 and Toby Jensen placed 162nd in 24:38.85.

ELC travels to the Lakes Conference Meet in Le Mars on Tuesday.
