FORT DODGE - Although North Union's Riley Bauer entered the Class 1A State Cross Country race expecting a tight finish on Saturday, the junior runner pulled away down the stretch and won by nearly 23 seconds.

He finished the 5K in 16 minutes, 9.7 seconds with Treynor sophomore Jerry Jorgenson finishing second in 16:32.2. Only the top 10 runners in Class 1A finished under 17 minutes. Bauer was the only runner in Class 1A with a state qualifying time under 16 minutes.

"My plan was to start off somewhat slow and hopefully out-spring the others to the end," said Bauer. "But they slowed down around the 2-mile mark and I started pushing the pace faster. I was expecting a tight race with a big spring at the end. I was looking to finish in the Top 3."

Bauer said he was a little disappointed in his time as he slowed down a little at the end after getting his big lead.

Bauer was the first champion for the merged North Union School District when he won the Class 1A 1600-meter run at the state track meet this past spring. Saturday's win makes him a two-time champion for the Warriors.

Looking ahead, Bauer looks to trim down his 1600 time and defend his title this spring.

"I also want to shave 30 seconds off my two-mile (3200-meter) time and qualify for Drake (Relays)," he said.

Next year, Bauer will be a senior and looking to defend his state individual cross-country title.

"I'd like to run under 16 minutes next year," he said.

However, the four-sport athlete first looks to the upcomding basketball season.
