Smith hits game winner to give Laker women first win of season

DES MOINES - Trailing 75-74 with 15 seconds left to the host Grandview Junior Varsity, Iowa Lakes put the basketball in the hands of point guard Lauryn Smith on Thursday.

The sophomore was able to get to the rim and finished the drive to score the game-winning basket at the buzzer for a 76-75 victory.

"I am so proud of our kids tonight," said Iowa Lakes coach Ashley Martin. "The girls fought hard for 40 minutes and showed a lot of heart. We had a good week of practice and it really showed tonight."

The game was close throughout with the Lakers leading 24-19 after one quarter, but trailing 38-37 at halftime before retaking a 54-51 victory after three quarters.

Smith led the Lakers with 20 points, eight rebounds, five assists and five steals.

Sophomore Jackie Petrich scored 13 points and grabbed five rebounds. Sophomore Tristyn Dunivant scored 10 points and grabbed seven rebounds. Freshmen Lemia Ntor-Ue scored 11 points and had eight rebounds and six steals.

Iowa Lakes (1-0 overall) returns to action for a 5:30 p.m. game Monday as they host the Dordt Junior Varsity in their home opener.
