After a rough start, the Iowa Lakes women bounced back well, but couldn't keep up with visiting Marshalltown in the second half in a 73-65 loss to the Tigers on Wednesday.

The visitors came out blazing, leaping out to a 22-10 lead in the first quarter. The Lakers came roaring back in the second quarter to take a 36-32 lead at the break. Both teams settled down in the third quarter with Marshalltown taking a 46-45 lead into the final frame.

"I'm proud of our team tonight," said Iowa Lakes coach Ashley Martin. "I thought we competed for 40 minutes with a very good Marshalltown team. We need to become more efficient on the offensive end but that will come as the season progresses."

Both teams shot 39 percent from the field, but Marshalltown made eight more 3-pointers than the Lakers-11-of-30 compared to the Lakers' 3-of-20. The Tigers also had a six-point advantage at the free throw line, where they made 16-of-25 compared to 10-of-16 for the Lakers.

Mia Wassink led the Lakers with 23 points, Shai'anye Wesley contributed 14 points. Point guard Lauryn Smith added nine points, seven rebounds and seven assists.

The Lakers finish the first semester 6-6 overall. The Lakers return to action on Friday, Jan. 6 when they travel to Boone to play against Briar Cliff Junior Varsity for a 5:30 p.m. tip.
