Estherville Lincoln Central's Josie Condon hit her second game-winning shot of the 2016-17 season with a layup over two Emmetsburg defenders in a 33-31 victory over the E'Hawks on Friday.

That final basket came with 2.8 seconds remaining after ELC had trailed most of the night, but never by much.

Like in her game-winning shot against Spirit Lake on Dec. 13, Condon said she wasn't thinking about a lot.

"I just wanted to take it to the hoop," she said.

Her final shot completed a 30-point performance as she finished 10-of-24 from the field and 7-of-8 from the free throw line. Exactly five years earlier, Allie Sievert scored 30 points in a 65-59 loss to Bishop Heelan.

Condon was quick to give her teammates credit for their defense in giving her a chance at the end. ELC had trailed 27-23 entering the final frame and held the E'Hawks to just four fourth-quarter points.

"We just needed to find another way to help the team and they did it," Condon said.

With Emmetsburg clamping down on Morgan White and the rest of the ELC squad, ELC coach Tony Klein noted that Condon just had a matchup advantage.

"She got good looks at she scored," he said. "Going 7-for-8 at the free line was key."

Klein said the fourth-quarter defense was "phenomenal and gave credit to White, Rylee Miller, Sydney Swanson and Karmen Hazen for their interior defense.

"We caused them a lot of problems," he said.

Condon scored the first 13 points for ELC including all seven points in the first quarter as ELC trailed Emmetsburg 8-7. A three-point play in the second quarter tied the game at 10-10 and Condon's second 3-pointer of the night gave the Midgets a 13-12 lead with 3:12 left in the first half.

Swanson's only bucket came after she grabbed an offensive rebound in the middle of the lane. She faked a shot and sidestepped to her right for an 8-foot jumper to tie the game at 15-15 with 45 seconds on the clock.

But Emmetsburg's Gretchen Hofstad hit a 3-pointer at the buzzer to give the visitors an 18-15 edge at the break.

Two free throws by Condon and a 3-pointer in the third quarter gave ELC a 20-18 advantage. Emmetsburg answered with a 9-1 run with ELC's lone point coming on a free throw by Katherine Johnson as the E'Hawks took their biggest lead of the night at 27-21.

However, two free throws by Condon cut the deficit to 27-23 to start the final frame.

Both teams struggled to score in the final frame with a three-point play by Condon tying the game at 28-28 with 2:31 remaining. Emmetsburg took the lead on a free throw, but a driving layup and foul allowed Condon to complete a three-point play and give ELC a 31-29 lead with 1:27.

Emmetsburg senior Bailey Naig then tied the game with two free throws with 1:11 on the clock.

Both teams had chances to take the lead with Condon's final layup providing the difference.

ELC finished with 22 rebounds led by Condon with six while Miller, White and Lindsey Jensen each had four. Miller also had four steals with Hazen and Jensen each with two.

ELC (4-6 overall, 3-2 in the Lakes Conference) is home against Jackson County Central tonight.

The ELC?Junior Varsity girls lost 38-36 to Emmetsburg. Kendall Evans led the Midgets with 10 points, Jordyn Moore had nine and Vanessa Woelber had eight.
