Trailing by 11 to start the fourth quarter, Estherville Lincoln Central came all the way back, tying Emmetsburg at 45-45 late in Friday's Lakes Conference matchup.

However, the E'Hawks outscored the Midgets 6-1 over the final minutes to preserve a 51-46 victory.

ELC coach Don Martindale said the effort and energy is there.

"But the field goal an free throw percentage is huge," he said. "We also had key turnovers and didn't execute some key plays."

Emmetsburg finished shooting 47 percent (20-of-43) from the field while ELC shot just 29 percent (15-of-51).

Emmetsburg jumped out to a 9-2 lead, but a three-point play by Trevor Friesner and a four-point play by Trey Jacobson, fouled on a 3-pointer, got ELC back within two at 11-9. However, the E'Hawks led 14-11 after one quarter.

ELC kept battling in the second quarter and consecutive 3-pointers by Jayson Moeller and Jacob Heinrichs tied the game at 19-19.

Emmetsburg had taken back the lead at 24-22 as the E'Hawks were playing for the last shot of the half. A steal by Jacobson led to him getting fouled at the buzzer, but he made 1-of-2 as the E'Hawks held a 24-23 advantage at the break.

It was all Emmetsburg in the third quarter as the E'Hawks opened up with a 7-0 run over the first 3 minutes. Three-pointers by Friesner and Jacobson helped ELC cut the deficit to five at 36-31, but a 7-1 run to end the period had the visitors with a 43-32 advantage.

ELC scrambled to get back in the game in the final period, holding Emmetsburg to just two points as ELC put together an 13-2 run capped by a Heinrichs 3-pointer from the corner to tie the game at 45-45.

Emmetsburg's Blake Vermulum, who finished with a game-high 20 points, immediately answered to give his team the lead. After a free throw by Jacob Bosch made the score 47-46, a steal by Jacobson looked to give the Midgets their first lead of the night. However the layup rolled off the rim and Emmetsburg made four free throws over the final minute to seal the victory.

Friesner led ELC with 13 points while Jacobson finished with 10, Heinrichs had eight, Bosch had six, Moeller had five and Brian Egeland had four.

ELC finished with 27 rebounds, led by Bosch with seven. He also had three assists. Jacobson had three of ELC's five steals.

ELC (3-7 overall, 0-5 in the Lakes Conference) is home against Jackson County Central tonight.
