Wrestling their second double dual in three days, Estherville Lincoln Central coach Mike Mix was still pleased with his team's progress despite losses to Cherokee and Spencer on Thursday.

The Midgets opened the night against Cherokee, losing 40-39 on criteria.

"It came down to the eighth criteria, which I was hoping would come in our favor, but there were some great matchups," said Mix.

Spencer proved too much for ELC as they won 57-24.

"The guys just came out and battled each and every match," said Mix. "We tell the guys if they can make it to the third period, they can win. I'm pleased at the way they came back in that second dual. They came back better than they have prior than the have in the season on back-to-back duals."

One of the higlight matches of the night came in the ELC dual against Cherokee as Lincoln Coakley took on Tyler Zeiman, ranked seventh at 160 pounds in Class 2A.

Zeiman scored the first takedown, but Coakley came up a with a reversal and two back points. An escape by Zeiman made the score 4-3 in Coakley's favor after the first period. Zeiman chose the bottom position to start the second period and the two wrestlers exchanged reversals with Coakley hanging on to a 6-5 lead. Coakley started on the bottom in the third period and came up with the 8-5 victory.

"We tell Lincoln if he wrestles fundamentally, that's the way to win," said coach Mix. "He wrestled a great fundamental match."

Another big win against Cherokee came at 132 pounds. ELC's Jalen Tripp battled back form an 8-2 deficit against Travis Steffens. He tied the match late in the third period and came up with a pin 10 seconds before the final buzzer in 5 minutes, 50 seconds.

ELC's Derek Gebel (160), Cole Anderson (285) and Jason Peta (113) all won by fall in the first period against their Cherokee opponents.

Against Spencer, ELC's wins included three pins and a forfeit. Coakley (170), Kylan Fitzgerald (182) and Peta (113) all posted wins by fall in the first period.
