ELC had two wrestlers in the finals-Coakley and 113-pound sophomore Jason Peta.

Coakley pinned his way to the title. In the first round, he needed just 1 minute, 29 seconds to defeat Western Christian's Eli Van Ginkel. In the semifinal, he pinned Emmetsburg's Jon Lace in 2:32.

Coakley, ranked ninth in the most recent 2A individual ranking, faced Cherokee's Tyler Zeiman in the final. Zeiman was ranked when the two wrestlers met earlier this season in Estherville. Coakley won that match 8-5 on Jan. 5.

While Zeiman scored the first takedown on Friday, Coakley came back with an escape, takedown and two back points to lead 5-2. With Zeiman choosing to start in the neutral position, Coakley extended his lead with a takedown in the second period to lead 7-2. Coakley immediately escaped to start the second period with Zeiman coming up with another takedown. However, Coakley came up with the reversal followed by the pin in 4:55.

Meanwhile Peta reached the finals with a couple of quick pins. He defeated LeMars' Jason Hand in 13 seconds and then defeated Cherokee's Michael Burkhart in 1:14.

In the finals, he met Cade Hopkins for the second time this season. Peta had pinned Hopkins in a meeting earlier this season. This time, Hopkins built a 7-2 lead before pinning Peta in 5:02.

Senior Derek Gebel finished third for ELC at 160 pounds. He opened the night with a pin against Cherokee's Mason Goebel in 5:03, but lost an 11-1 major decision to Spencer's Brody Kacmarynski in the semifinal.

In the consolation round, he won 16-4 over Emmetsburg's Bret Hoyman and then won 11-4 against LeMars' Myles Kass in the third-place match.

ELC Cole Anderson (285) finished fourth for ELC. He started the night with a pin against Spirit Lake Park's John Bauer, but lost by fall to eventual champion Nic Hoefling of Spencer. In the consolation round, he pinned LeMars' Brennick Hoppe, but then lost a 7-2 decision to Western Christian's Spencer Cox in the third-place match.

Ethan Crees (145), Kylan Fitzgerald (182) and Juan Diaz each placed sixth for ELC.

Michael Houge (106), Chase Budach (126) and Nick Egeland (220) did not place.

In the Lakes Conference junior varsity scramble, Sean Theesfeld (185-195) placed first, Edwin Morales (185-195) placed third) and Kali Zufall (195-215) placed fourth.

ELC travels to Graettinger to face Graettinger-Terril/Ruthven-Ayrshire on Tuesday.
