Funeral services for Norman E. Nelson, 81, of Estherville, will be held 10:30 a.m., Monday, March 27, 2017, at United Lutheran Church in Ringsted with Pastor Lauri Boysen officiating. Military rites by the Ringsted American Legion Post will be held at Ringsted Memorial Cemetery, Ringsted. He died on Wednesday, March 22, 2017, at Avera Heart Hospital in Sioux Falls, S.D.

Visitation will be held from 5-7 p.m., Sunday at the church in Ringsted.

Norman E. Nelson the son of Nels and Vera (Larsen) Nelson was born April 17, 1935 in Ringsted.

He received his education at country school and graduated from Ringsted High School, as a Ringsted "Great Dane."

On Aug. 3, 1957, he was united in marriage to Mary Jean Beardsley in Ringsted. He was drafted into the United States Army in 1957, stationed in Ft. Riley, Kan., till 1959.

After the Army, Norman bought land near Cairo, Mo., to farm, and moved his young family to Missouri. However, tragedy struck in November of 1965 when his parents were killed in a car accident as they journeyed to the funeral of his in-law. He took over the family farm in 1966 where he farmed his entire life and became a pillar to the Ringsted community. He was a member of the United Lutheran Church in Ringsted. He helped establish the Ingham-Okoboji Bible Camp and he enjoyed spending time with his family making memories at their cabin on Ingham Lake. Mary passed away Easter Sunday morning, March 31, 1991.

On July 4, 1994 Norman married Bonnie Whitehouse. They made their home in Estherville. He embraced his new family into his heart creating lasting memories with Bonnie, the Whitehouse children and grandchildren.

For hobbies, Norman enjoyed dancing, fishing, deer hunting, and playing cards with his friends and family.

Left to cherish Norman's memory are his wife, Bonnie of Estherville; children, Joleen Nelson of Ringsted; Diane (Shawn) Smith of Graettinger; Gail (Wayne) Mathine of Spirit Lake; five grandchildren; four great granddaughters; step-children, Steve (Eileen) Whitehouse of Sioux City; David (Karen) Whitehouse of Maple Grove, Minn.; Mike Whitehouse of Chandler, Ariz.; Peggy Brashear of Estherville; Kathy Whitehouse of Estherville; eight step-grandchildren; and six step-great grandchildren.

He has been preceded in death by his wife, Mary; parents; one sister, Cleo Long; two brothers, Nels Duane "Bub" Nelson and Gary Nelson.
