Mass of Christian Burial for John Duane Hanson, 85, of Sergeant Bluff, formerly of Estherville, will be held 10:30 a.m., Tuesday, April 4, 2017, at St. Patrick's Catholic Church in Estherville with Father Merlin Schrad, celebrant. Interment will be held at St. Patrick's Catholic Cemetery with military rites by VFW Post 3388 of Estherville. He died March 31, 2017, at Holy Spirit Nursing Home in Sioux City.

Visitation will be held from 5-7 p.m., Monday at the Henry-Olson Funeral Chapel in Estherville with a vigil service at 7 p.m.

John Duane Hanson was born on Aug. 23, 1931, to Ernest and Lillian (Kinnard) Hanson in Estherville. He attended and graduated from Estherville High School in 1951. After graduation he entered into the US Army and was honorably discharged in 1954. John was a member of the Catholic Faith.

On Jan. 14, 1956, he was united in marriage to Jeanette Weber in Ayrshire. The couple made their home in Estherville where they started their family. He was employed as a salesman with John Morrell and Company. The couple moved to Sergeant Bluff in 1985 after the plant closing in Estherville. John continued his employment with John Morrell and Company, retiring on June 29, 2001, after 44 years of employment with them.

John was a member of the VFW Post 3388 and the American Legion Post 0662.

John is survived by his wife of 61 years Jeanette of Sergeant Bluff; his children Dan (Julie) Hanson of Sioux Falls, S.D., Tom (Penny) Hanson of Worthington, Minn., Greg (Janet) Hanson of Bondurant, Bill (Eunice) Hanson of Sergeant Bluff, Paul (Linda) Hanson of New Freedom, Penn., Jim (Angie) Hanson of Marion, Ill., Andy (Maureen) Hanson of Sheridan, Ark, Tony (Laura) Hanson of Johnston, Margaret (Doug) Brunscheon of Waverly, Joe (Stacey) Hanson of Altoona, and Janet (Brian) Haren of Jackson, Minn.; 34 grandchildren, and 34 great-grandchildren. He is also survived by his siblings Betty Platter and Janice (Clyde) Hall of Estherville, Janie (Bubs) Johnson of Spirit Lake, Carolyn (Hermie) Gerdes of Jackson, Minn., and Coleen (Chris) Blass of Estherville.

John is preceded in death by his parents Ernest and Lillian Hanson, son Timothy Hanson, sister Doris Alig, and brothers-in-law, Leland Alig and Jack Platter.
