Misty Wolff of the Centers Against Abuse and Sexual Assault (CAASA) says sexual assault awareness is vital in this age of public confusion about what is a sexual assault, and a high rate of sexual assault occurring, including some highly publicized cases nationwide. April 10, members of (SART) the Sexual Assault Response Team will attend an event at 11 a.m. in the city council chamber to talk about sexual assault awareness. Mayor Kenny Billings will sign a proclamation declaring the month of April Sexual Assault Awareness Month.

"It's happening here in our rural communities, and it takes local awareness, protest, and [everyone's] help to end sexual violence," Wolff said.

Wolff also announced Denim Day, set for April 27. Denim Day is a campaign to prevent sexual abuse through education and public awareness. People coming together to wear denim on that day are a visible sign of protest against sexual violence, Wolff said.

"By participating in Denim Day on Thursday, April 27, 2017, you can play a role in the prevention of sexual assault," Wolff said.

CAASA is asking community members, elected officials, businesses and students to make a social statement with their fashion on April 27, by wearing jeans as a visual sign of support for survivors of sexual violence.

Participants will also receive a sticker letting everyone know why they're wearing jeans, Wolff said. Along with raising awareness, Denim Day participants are invited to donate $5 to CAASA for the participation in the day, and for stickers. Wolff said the CAASA office has packets for participating workplaces, schools, and groups, which include stickers, posters, and a return envelope to collect and turn in donations.
