ELC splits duals to start week

CHEROKEE, SPENCER - The Estherville Lincoln Central Boys Tennis Team had a busy start to the week with road trips to Cherokee and Spencer.

On Monday, ELC defeated Cherokee 6-3, but lost 9-0 to Spencer on Tuesday.

ELC coach Tony Klein was pleased with Monday's victory.

"This was a very tight meet and a lot of boys did a great job of playing well in pressure situations," he said.

After splitting the singles matches 3-3, ELC swept the doubles.

Singles victories came at the Nos. 2-4 spots. Logan Newhouse defeated Layne Reinhardt 10-2, Trevor Friesner won 10-4 over Tyler Richardson and Toby Jensen won 10-7 over Dylan Nelson. In other singles play, Isaac Jorgenson lost 10-7 to Cale Pingel, Michael Houseman lost 10-6 to Thadeus Booth and Jose Saavedra lost 11-9 to Brendon Sullivan.

"Logan dominated in his singles match," said Klein. "Trevor and Toby each struggled in the middle of their singles matches, but played well down the stretch and put their opponents away."

In doubles, Jorgenson and Newhouse won 10-4 over Pingel and Richardson; Friesner and Houseman won 11-10 (8-6) over Booth and Nelson and Jensen and Saavedra won 10-3 over Matthew Stieneke and Carson Mongan.

"Logan and Isaac played really well again at #1 doubles to get us off to a good start," said Klein. "Michael and Trevor were behind three different times in crucial situations and came back to win in a tiebreak to clinch the meet for us. Toby and Jose played really well in finishing out a great meet."

In junior varsity play, Ahries Nissen lost 8-5, JT Christensen lost 8-4 and Edwin Morales lost 8-0. Morales and Nick McClurg played one doubles match and lost 8-0.

Tigers sweep ELC

On Tuesday, Spencer was just too much for ELC.

In singles play, Jorgesnon lost 10-2 to Kade Carpenter, Newhouse lost 10-5 to Cam Chaffin, Friesner lost 10-4 to Trey Seivers, Jensen lost 10-0 to Marcus Klemme, Houseman lost 10-1 to Austin Crew and Saavedra lost 10-3 to Francesco Faruolo.

In doubles, Jorgenson and Newhouse lost 10-0 to Carpenter and Klemme; Friesner and Houseman lost 10-2 to Seivers and Crew and Jensen and Saavedra lost 10-2 to Chaffin and John Feldmann.

In junior varsity play, Ahries Nissen lost 8-2, JT Christensen lost 8-7, Nick McClurg lost 8-3 and Edwin Morales lost 8-4. In doubles, Nissen and Christensen lost 8-5 and McClurg and Morales lost 8-1.

ELC is home against Le Mars this evening.
