Midgets defeat Tigers for first win of season

ELC?wins five singles matches vs. Spencer

The Estherville Lincoln Central Girls Tennis Team started the week against a tough Cherokee team, losing 6-3 on Monday, but the Midgets bounced back well with a 6-3 win over Spencer on Tuesday.

"I was glad too see the varsity have success and build confidence," said ELC coach Larry Kirchner. "We still need to work on our ground strokes and consistency."

In Tuesday's win over the Tigers, ELC had five singles victories.

Kendall Evans won 10-3 over Megan Huss, Josie Condon won 10-0 over Grace Ahern, Brianna Fix won 10-5 over Autumn Rausch, Scarlett Rose won 10-5 over Madison Carpenter and Sam Tredway won 10-8 over Morgan Fitzgerald. The lone loss came at the No. 5 singles as Liz Herrick lost 10-4 over Ally Schlaeger.

In doubles, Condon and Evans won 10-2 over Huss and Ahern while Fix and Rose lost 10-6 to Rausch and Schlaeger and Herrick and Tredway lost 10-7 to Carpenter and Riley Palmer.

In junior varsity play Tuesday, Alissa Olson lost 8-5, Emily Herum won 8-6, Jessica Wilson lost 8-2, Savannah Wilson lost 8-6, Shiloh Kirchner lost 8-3 and Abby Schmaus won 9-8 (7-1). In doubles, Olson and Herum won 10-4, Jessica Wilson and Savannah Wilson lost 8-2 and Kirchner and Olga Martin-Felipe lost 8-5.

Braves pull past ELC

On Monday, ELC got wins at the top the Midgets won the No. 1 singles match 10-6 over Jordyn Bingham and Jose Condon won the No. 2 singles match won 10-3 over Kylie Mongan. In doubles, the ELC duo teamed up two win 10-3 over Mongan and Dusty Wright.

In other singles matches, Brianna Fix lost 10-6 to Wright, Liz Herrick lost 10-1 to Clare Conley, Samantha Tredway lost 10-4 to Grace Boyle and Emily Herum lost 10-4 to Courtney Aden.

"We had a last minute scratch so we had to bring up our No. 2 JV player (Emily Herum) and she competed nicely, I thought," said coach Kirchner. "Bri kept playing tough after getting down early. Next time, she knows she can compete with that girl and hopefully can play even better."

In other doubles matches, Herrick and Tredway lost 10-1 to Bingham and Aden and Fix and Herum lost 10-1 to Clare Conley and Fran Conley.

"Doubles-wise, we're strong at No. 1, otherwise we have a lot of work to do," Kirchner said.

ELC is on the road today at Le Mars.
