The day began with honors to all the service men and women who have gone before at the Estherville cemeteries, and ended with a three-volley salute. The flags in Library Square and Courthouse Square, as well as those inside the courthouse, served as a reminder of how many have passed.

The Estherville Lincoln Central High School Choir, directed by Steve Bradburn and accompanied by Laura Kiebler, sang "God Bless America," during a Memorial Day program at the National Guard Readiness center.

Capt. Justin Wygle of the Headquarters and Headquarters Battery, 1st Battalion, 194th Field Artillery in Fort Dodge gave the address.

Wygle pointed out that most veterans, even after hanging up their uniforms, have served the nation, state, and community in some capacity.

"Service wasn't just a phase of life, but a lifelong commitment they made," Wygle said.

An honor guard from the VFW dedicated the flags from the families of veterans who died in the last year.

The clearing skies allowed several groups of people to walk among the flags in Library Square and Courthouse Square.
