Barbara Kathman Jan. 3, 1937 - June 4, 2017

A Celebration of Life service for Barbara Kathman, 80, of Estherville will be held 10:30 a.m., Thursday, June 8, 2017, at Bethel Lutheran Church in Graettinger with Pastor Chris Lang officiating. Interment will be at St. Jacob's Catholic Cemetery, Graettinger. Barb passed away on June 4, 2017, at Lakes Regional Health Care in Spirit Lake.

Visitation was held Wednesday at the church in Graettinger.

Barbara Joan Kathman was born on Jan. 3, 1937 in Estherville to Maurice and Barbara (Ruckman) Houts. She attended Estherville Schools. In 1954, she was united in marriage to James Miller. The couple later divorced. She was employed at Unisys for over 20 years. She then worked for eight years at SNC. For 19 years she did daycare and retired in 2012.

Barbara was united in marriage to Joseph Kathman on April 25, 1992. The couple resided in Graettinger. Barbara was a member of Bethel Lutheran Church in Graettinger. She enjoyed shopping and traveling. Barb also enjoyed playing cards: 500 and Hand and Foot with her sister Florence were her favorite. Barb's greatest joy was spending time with her grandchildren.

Barb is survived by her children: Roseann (Willie Joe) Dubose of Sumter, S.C., James (Carol) Miller, Jr. of Estherville, Dwayne (Linda) Miller of Spencer, Barbara (Tony) McQueen of Lynchburg, Tenn., and Lisa (Dennis) Harris of Graettinger; 11 grandchildren; 13 great-grandchildren; and three great-great grandchildren. Her siblings also survive her: Florence Harris, Faydean (Robert) Williardson, David (Martha) Houts, Marcia (W.C.) Sauls, and Michael Houts; and her brother-in-law Howard Couples.

Barb is preceded in death by her parents, her husband, her brother, Mickey Houts, her sister Sandy Couples, two granddaughters and a grandson.

In lieu of flowers memorials preferred to Warner Dialysis Center in Spencer or Lakes Regional Hospice in Spirit Lake.
