He was united in marriage to Lois Williams at the Dolliver Methodist Church on Feb. 28, 1948. To this union two sons were born. They made their home in rural Dolliver and rural Estherville for many years. They later moved to Estherville and Emmetsburg where he currently resided.

Lester and Lois worked together on the farm as well as owning and operating a Montgomery Ward catalog store and furniture store. Lester also had several rental properties that he and Lois managed and remodeled. He still owned and managed an apartment house in Emmetsburg at the time of his death. Lester took pride in never retiring-there was always something to do, and he could fix nearly anything.

Lester was a member of Immanuel Evangelical Lutheran Church in rural Estherville and held many church offices. He was also a member of the VFW Post #2295 in Emmetsburg. Lester looked forward to attending Chamber Coffee held on Fridays at various locations throughout Emmetsburg.

He was preceded in death by his wife, Lois, in 2016, his son, Danial; his parents; his brother, George, and sisters: Lillian Schroeder, Hazel Cuff, Edna Emerson, and Agnes Steele.

He is survived by his son, Tim and Donna Handeland of Estherville; daughter-in-law, Jeanne Handeland of Wallingford; grandchildren, Amy Wilcox, Jason and Carrie Handeland, Matt Handeland; Mark Handeland, and Jennifer and Wes Snyder; great grandchildren, Bridgette and Spencer Wilcox, Claytan, Coltan and Brooklyn Handeland, Ella, Ava and Tysen Snyder; sisters, Alice Olson and Helen Birkland; as well as many relatives and friends.
