He received his education and graduated from Gruver High School in 1937. While in high school he participated in baseball and basketball and enjoyed watching other activities.

Vernon and Vera had been childhood friends throughout their school years. On Oct. 28, 1941, he was united in marriage to Vera Grems in Fairmont, Minn. Vernon and Vera celebrated their 76th wedding anniversary on Oct. 28.

Vernon had an intense love of the land and nature. A lifelong farmer, he and Vera made their living farming east of Estherville. During his farming years, he raised hogs and cattle along with the crops. Some of those years, he and his sons raised and showed hogs at regional hog shows, winning many ribbons and trophies. A particular source of pride was the barn on their farm, which had been built by his family using logs originating in Canada. Visitors to the farm were often treated to a tour of the barn.

Vernon enjoyed playing and watching sports. He was a Minnesota Twins fan, attending games each year. He also enjoyed following the Chicago White Sox. The Rose Bowl game and vacation was a particularly memorable event for him. He and Vera spent many happy hours playing cards, especially 500. His most important leisure time activity was attending his children and grandchildren's sporting events, spending many hours at the ball field.

He was an active member of the First Presbyterian Church, where he served many times in the offices of Elder, Deacon and other church offices, and even helped with the maintenance of the church building. He was a member of the Emmet County Farm Bureau for more than 60 years and was involved with their many activities as well as serving on their board. Vernon also served as an Emmet County Supervisor for 10 years. He was on the Gruver School Board before and at the time the school became Lincoln Central. One of the activities he enjoyed most was being a member of Toastmasters, writing and giving speeches on many diverse topics.

Left to cherish Vernon's memory are his wife, Vera of Estherville; children, Phyllis and partner, Don of Denison, Iowa; Jim and wife, Karen of Tampa Bay, Fla.; Dale and wife, Diane of Kissimmee, Fla.; Vickie and husband, Bill of Spirit Lake; Gordon and wife, Diane of Estherville; Lance and wife, Heidi of Estherville; 17 grandchildren; 26 great grandchildren; one great-great grandchild; and sister, Florence Berneking of Sequim, Wash.
