Lee Samuel Christensen has been granted the right to present oral argument in the appeal of his conviction of murder in the second degree for the June 6, 2015 shooting death of Thomas Bortvit in Estherville.

The Iowa Court of Appeals scheduled the oral argument for Wednesday, Feb. 21 at 1:30 p.m. in the Viking Theatre in Grand View University's Student Center in Des Moines.

The proceedings are brief; each side is limited to 10 minutes with five minutes for a reply by appellant Christensen's attorney, Leon Spies of Iowa City. Kevin Cmelik and Kelli Huser, Assistant State Attorneys General, will present the case for the State of Iowa.

The next step is assigning the case to a three-judge panel, which will hear the arguments.

Anyone is welcome to observe oral arguments before the Iowa Court of Appeals, according to representatives of the Court. Seating is available for 40 people.
