Committee proposes county road bike routes

Representatives of community present three proposed bike routes to county supervisors

Lexie Ruter said, "As communities grow, people expect to have more and more amenities."

That's when the rubber hit the road for three individual trails originating in Emmet County. One heads to Terril, one in Swan Lake township, and one heads to Ingham Lake. The "trails" would be maps and signs to guide bicyclists on county roads with two meeting the Dickinson County trails and one going into Jackson County, Minn.

The committee approached the supervisors to make them aware and to ask for help with signage and publicity for the initiative.

Ruter said county engineer Walter Davis-Oeth has been "a huge help in putting together a budget for how much the signs are going to run."

Ruter said she met with Erin Reed, Dickinson County trails manager.

"This involves purchasing road route signs from Iowa Prison Industries. Some of these might be arrows attached to existing poles," Ruter said.

The signs would start from the top of half mile hill heading out of town, Ruter said.

Davis-Oeth said he was concerned about liability.

"I need to maintain the roads of the entire county equally, not give special attention to bike trail roads," Davis-Oeth said.

Ruter said working with Emmet County was one step in showing a collaboration among the county, city and other entities to obtain grant funding for the project.

Committee member Michelle Ingvall said the committee is working on getting the proper permissions.

The bike trail committee members are: Penny Clayton, Brian Dalziel, Walter Davis-Oeth, Tena Hansen, Roger Hash, Lyle Hevern, Laura Hoffman, Rick Houseman, Dale Husted, Michelle Ingvall, Bob Leifeld, Jeff Rose, and Lexie Ruter.

Ruter said anyone with questions about the bike trail could contact any member of the committee.
