Amy H. Peterson - Staff Writer (apeterson@esthervillenews.net) , Estherville News

Deanna (Anderson) Gjerde sent this clipping of a letter her brother, George, sent to this newspaper in October, 1969. George Andrew Anderson Jr. lost his life in 2010 to complications from Agent Orange, Gjerde said.

George was serving in the U.S. Marine Corps, First Marine Aircraft Wing as a field radio relay operator. He enlisted as an 18-year-old on Oct. 3, 1967 and was honorably discharged from the Marine Corps on Oct. 2, 1971.

Here is the text of his letter:

To the Daily News:

I'm just a local boy from Estherville. And I would like to know just what the United States is coming to. I'm just one out of thousands thinking this. Yes, I am a boy here in Vietnam.

It seems like everytime I read a paper from home, there is something in it about kids demonstrating against the war.

Kids burning their draft cards, kids burning the American flag. Yes, our flag many men died for. But yet they do this.

And most of all, these kids are in colleges. They are supposed to become the men and women of tomorrow. Can't they understand there are men dying every day just so they can keep their freedom?

Sure, they say there isn't a war going on. But just ask one of us here in Vietnam if there is a war going on. Do you think we want to come home after 13 months here? And see this going on?

Sure, they say they are afraid of dying. But don't you think we are also? But we know just what we are here for.

This country wants to be free just like we are. I think that is good enough reason right there, for being here.

I don't know what else I can say, but I do hope and pray that the kids in the United States of America will understand just what is going on. I do hope so, and soon.

PFC Geo. A. Anderson Jr.
