Class 2A District Preview Midgets to host E’Hawks

Playoffs start Tuesday for ELC

Emmetsburg's 3-2 victory over Okoboji on Saturday gives the E'Hawks the opportunity to play Class 2A No. 7 Estherville Lincoln Central at 7 p.m., Tuesday, here at Hess-Limberg Field in Estherville. This game is a District 3 semifinal with Pocahontas Area (19-10) and Sioux Central (14-10) at 5 p.m.

The winners of both semifinal games will play in the district final at 7 p.m., Saturday, here in Estherville.

ELC (22-3) and Emmetsburg (11-10) met less than two weeks ago (June 29) with the Midgets winning 11-3 behind a solid pitching performance from junior Alec Heifner. Both teams are likely to see a different pitcher in the second go around.

Against Okoboji, Emmetsburg junior Corby Saathoff and freshman Ben Dunlap split time on the mound with combined stats of two earned runs on four hits with seven strikeouts and eight walks. The E'Hawks had just four hits in that contest.

In ELC's earlier win over Emmetsburg, Heifner gave up eights hits, but just one walk.

ELC coach Lee Evans will likely start one of two senior pitchers-Trey Jacobson or Evan Olesen. Jacobson is 3-0 in six starts this season. In 33 2/3 innings, he's along give up seven runs (four earned) with an earned run averaged of 0.83. Jacobson has struck out 42 batters, walked 23 and hit two while opponents are batting .173 against him. Olesen had three starts and three appearances and is 4-1 this season. In 23 1/3 innings, he has allowed just four runs with two earned. His ERA is 0.60 and he has 27 strikeouts to seven walks and three hit batters. Opponents are batting .156 against him.

ELC's bats are also doing more damage this season. Junior Briar Rowley is batting .471 while Jacobson is batting .464 with both batters recording 33 hits. Olesen is batting .433 with 29 hits while junior Bennett Loock is batting .415 and senior Jacob Bosch is batting .382. The Midgets are batting .340 as a team compared to the E'Hawks, who are batting .221. Junior Nick Schany (.448) is the only Emmetsburg player batting over .300.

The Midgets will be looking to get back to the Class 2A State Tournament, held at Principal Park in Des Moines, after losing in the state quarterfinal in 2017. The winner of the district title will play in the substate game at 7 p.m., Tuesday, July 17, in Algona.
