Evan Olesen threw a four-hit shutout and his teammates gave him plenty of support as seventh-ranked Estherville Lincoln Central ended Emmetsburg's season with a 10-0, five-inning Class 2A District victory on Tuesday.

Olesen struck out six batters and walked one in the complete game victory, throwing 69 pitches.

"Evan did a great job of staying around the zone, and with just 69 pitches, we'll have him available for Saturday if we need him," said ELC coach Lee Evans.

The Midgets (23-3 overall) will host Pocahontas Area (20-10) at 7 p.m., Saturday at Hess-Limberg Field in Estherville. The Indians advanced with a 3-2, nine-inning victory over South Central Calhoun here in Estherville prior to the ELC/Emmetsburg game on Tuesday.

For ELC against the E'Hawks, the two teams were scoreless through the first 2 1/2 innings.

That all changed in the bottom of the third inning.

No. 9 batter Seth Loock and leadoff batter Trey Jacobson drew consecutive walks. Jacob Bosch laid down a bunt and pitcher Hunter McAllister threw to third, but Loock beat the ball there and all were safe. Briar Rowley then cleared the bases with a hit to right-center field, as Seth Loock, Jacobson and courtesy runner Izaak Sander crossed the plate.

Olesen followed with a single and courtesy runner Noah Heifner stole second base. A sacrifice fly to center by Lucas Gardner scored Rowley, as ELC led 4-0.

The Midgets weren't done as Blake Miller singled to left to bring Noah Heifner home. Bennett Loock and Alec Heifner both drew walks to reload the bases. Miller scored when Seth Loock hit a grounder to second. The E'Hawks took the force at second, but were unable to turn the double play. Jacobson then hit a grounder to the E'Hawk shortstop, who overthrew first base allowing both Bennett Loock and Seth Loock to score for an 8-0 ELC lead.

ELC added one run in the fourth inning as Rowley and Olesen drew back-to-back walks with Rowley scoring on a double by Gardner. With the key 10th-run at third, E'Hawk reliever Nick Schany recorded two straight strikeouts and forced a pop-up to end the threat.

In the fifth inning, Seth Loock hit a leadoff single down the right field line. Jacobson then attempted a sacrifice bunt and earned a single as the ball dribble down the first-base line and he beat the throw. After a sacrifice bunt by Bosch, Emmetsburg intentionally walked Rowley to load the bases. Olesen came up with the walkoff single up the middle, as Seth Loock scored his third and final run of the game.

"Seth did a great job leading of a couple innings and got on every time," said coach Evans. "He got us back to the top of our order where we have our power. As soon as we got the lead, we kept putting pressure on them. We were disciplined and didn't get too anxious."

ELC finished the night with eight hits, as Olesen went 2-2, Jacobson was 2-3, Rowley, Gardner and Seth Loock each were 1-2 and Miller was 1-3.

Emmetsburg's pitchers combined for four strikeouts and eight walks.

ELC vs. Pocahontas

Area preview

In 2015, Pocahontas Area eighth grader Jace Davidson and the Indians ended ELC's season with a 6-1 victory in district play. Now a junior, Davidson pitched eight innings and threw 111 pitches in Tuesday's 3-2, nine-inning victory over South Central Calhoun. Pocahontas Area's next top pitcher is freshman Christian Davidson. Christian has a 6-2 record. In 50 2/3 innings, he has a 2.90 earned run average with 44 strikeouts with 13 walks. Opponents are batting .221.

As a team, the Indians are batting .326 this season led by Jace Davidson (.439). Senior Shea Ruffridge leads the team in hits with 43 and is batting .396. senior Chase Boeve is batting .404 while Christian Davidson is batting .343.

ELC is batting .342 as a team led by Trey Jacobson (.473), Briar Rowley (.472), Evan Olesen (.449), Bennett Loock (.400) and Jacob Bosch (.372).

However, Jacobson will likely get the start with Rowley also available.

Pocahontas Area defeated the E'Hawks, 7-0, in a Twin Lakes Conference matchup.

The winner of Saturday's game will play at 7 p.m., Tuesday at Algona against the District 4 champion for the right to go to state. Forest City (15-9) and Lake Mills (14-9) play that game on Saturday in Forest City. Forest City won the regular season matchup with Lake Mills 7-6.
