SWEA CITY - Class 1A No. 7 North Union's bid for a fourth straight trip to the state softball tournament was thwarted by a 10-0 loss to unranked Newell-Fonda on Monday.

The Mustangs took advantage of North Union errors and also played the "small ball" game well with bunts going for singles on the way to building a 5-0 lead. In the seventh inning, Newell-Fonda found the gaps in the outfield, as the Mustangs plated five insurance runs on a single, a pair of doubles and capped by a two-run home run by Ellie Lago.

Newell-Fonda and North Union met earlier in the season and the Mustangs were the only team to prevent the Warriors from scoring.

Offensively, North Union had chances, mainly in the first and third innings.

In the first inning, Hope Steinberger led off with a single followed by a bunt single by Katelyn Thackery. A sacrifice bunt moved the runners to second and third. Bre Anderson drew a two-out walk to load the bases, but Newell-Fonda starter Ella Larsen notched her second strikeout to end the threat.

In the third inning. Steinberger singled up the middle and Kate Anderson hit a one-out single to left field. Rory McClellan then hit a grounder to second base with the Mustangs taking the force at second to retire Sam Nielsen, who was running for Anderson. But after McClellan stole second base, a Larsen strikeout again ended the Warriors threat.

The Warriors had just one base runner the rest of the game, as Brooklyn Prochniak reached on a Mustang error to start the seventh inning. But three infield pop-ups ended the Warriors season.

Meanwhile, Newell-Fonda took advantage of a two-out error in the second inning. A single to center field by Peyton Wilken got past Steinberger allowing the first run to score.

In the fourth inning, a single and error allowed Megan Morenz to get to third base. Maggie Walter bunted and Kate Anderson's throw home wasn't in time to get Wilken. A stolen base and a sacrifice bunt got Morenz to third base and another suicide bunt scored the run for a 3-0 Mustang lead.

The fifth inning started with a single, a hit-by pitch and a sac bunt with a two-RBI single giving the visitors a 5-0 lead. Newell-Fonda ran itself out of the inning as catcher Rory McClellan threw out Maggie Walker trying to steal second base.

For North Union, Kate Anderson took the loss, as she gave up 10 runs (six earned) on eight hits with seven strikeouts and one walk.

North Union finished with five hits, as Steinberger went 2-3 while Kate Anderson was 1-2 and Thackery and Prochniak each were 1-3.

The Warriors graduate two seniors-Kate Anderson and Bre Anderson.-who played in their final high school game.
