Jessica Peterson Tierney of Mason City started the North Iowa Women's Self-Defense Initiative to "promote feminism and prevent violence against women by empowering them with the skills, knowledge, and confidence they need to recognize potentially dangerous situations, to minimize their risk of being targeted by predators, and to fight back physically against an attacker; and to give power back to survivors of violence in a supportive, compassionate, and non-victim-blaming fashion," according to the company's mission statement.

Tierney was raised in North Iowa, and pursued psychology because she wanted to help people who were in crisis. Tierney trained as a self-defense instructor in 1998, and joined the American Women's Self Defense Association in 2003, serving as its executive director from 2013-17.

She is a Licensed Social Worker for the State of Iowa, a member of the National Organization for Victim Assistance: Advanced National Community Crisis Response Team, and Iowa Crisis Response Team member, a Sabre Personal Safety Academy Instructor, has passed the Iowa Gun Class Training Course, Insights Training Center 27-hour Defensive Folding Knife Course, Concealed Carry Vehicle Firearm Tactics, NRA Basics of Pistol Shooting, and has the AWSDA Self-Defense Instructor Certification.
