Palestinians: Child killed in airstrike

August 19, 2014

GAZA CITY, Gaza Strip (AP) — Palestinian medical officials in the Gaza Strip say two people, including a 2-year-old girl, have been killed in an Israeli airstrike.

Israel resumed its campaign of airstrikes in Gaza on Tuesday in response to a barrage of Palestinian rocket fire that shattered a truce. The sudden burst of fighting has threatened to derail an Egyptian effort to end a monthlong war between Israel and Hamas militants in Gaza.

Palestinian medical official Ashraf al-Kidra said a total of 21 people were wounded in an airstrike that hit a building that houses offices of Hamas' Al Aqsa TV station. He said two people, including a 40-year-old woman and the young girl, were killed in a separate airstrike in Gaza City. They were the first fatalities in Tuesday's fighting.

Palestinian and U.N. officials say more than 2,000 Palestinians, most of them civilians, have been killed since the fighting erupted on July 8. Sixty-seven people on the Israeli side have died, all but three of them soldiers.
