cont: What does that tell you about the sheriff's discretion and intuition? It tells me that if the sheriff is so absolutely blind to the merits and capabilities of individuals he allegedly serves, he's actually failing them and sure as*****should not be sheriff.

"We enforce the laws. We dont legislate or judge the laws." This should be a mission statement of EVERY sheriff in this country. They should be required to say this every morning before they sit down at their desks. Some of these Sheriffs have assumed the role of Nanny, they forgot their job is to enforce the law and perform the duties of the office. FAR too many sheriffs have used the CCW issuance as a personal political plumb. Some sheriffs use "discretion" in denying permits because they bought into the theory that there would be blood running in the streets if even one person were issued a CCW permit. But, in every state where sheriffs reflexively exercised their discretion to deny permits, states that later went to shall issue, no rivers flowed in the streets. The people whom the sheriffs reflexively denied as "horrible, uncalculable risks to slaughter dozens, if not hundreds, if allowed to carry a gun" actually turned out to be FAR more law abiding

The sheriff's remarks echo the usual generalities that don't speak to the facts. Concealed carry does not lead to increased criminal activity or dangerous activity. This is a proven fact. I'd like to hear the deputy's response to this data.

Umm, does the sheriff or the deputy in the article realize that once a permit is issued in Iowa it is valid state wide? A person issued a permit in another county CAN legally carry in any county in Iowa -even in Emmett county! There are currently 27,000 permits issued in Iowa. Almost all Iowa counties DO issue permits to qualified and trained citizens. Are we somehow to believe that the good people of Emmett Co. are somehow less responsible, capable and trustworthy than the rest of Iowans? I also hope that Deputy Martins doesn't assume that just because someone doesnt have a permit that they are not armed. I dont think having a permit is going to keep someone who is intent on doing harm from doing it. The bad guys do not bother to apply for or bother with permits! The current proposed Bill2092 would actually still allow a sheriff to deny but they would just have to write a reason why. perhaps some people should read the Bill before commenting on it!
