Deborah, what's the name of your church? I might join with on-the-ball folks like you. Not being as religious as some, I'd be more blunt and say the gun lobby's tactic bringing in the outsiders to our county to scam a poll is flat out deceitful. I logged on to their site and can attest that it's true. It's like "have gun will travel." I'm going to talk to Jack Kibbie about this. I'd suggest your group do the same. A small group of determined fanatics ought not to get away with using a fake poll to sell their gun bill. By the way, I think their bill stinks.

I was at the same meeting with CitizenJ and if a member hadn't logged on to the IACarry site and showed us the threads rigging this I just wouldn't have believed it. Bringing outside gun lobbyists from all over the midwest to stack this poll is...well, very unChristian like. And then using it in letters to legislators to say that's how people in our area feel is even worse. It's like those fraudulent elections in dictatorships. But I really don't like what's in the bill for the reasons CitizenJ said. It's bad legislation that seems to just be for selling more guns at the expense of public safety.

This is a civilized country and we have excellent law enforcement. The law should be changed to have ONLY professional law enforcement carrying concealed loaded weapons. We need to prevent gun violence and that means not having people driving around with loaded pistols. When tempers flair as they do, we don't need people carrying loaded guns for that in the 1 in ten millon chance of losing your wallet. Yer more likely to be hit by lighting and you can avoid that by getting off the golf course.

A member of our church's violence prevention committee found out about the poll stacking. We went over the bill and found huge problems with it. It takes all discretion away from the sheriff and throws out the requirement for ressonable justification to go armed with a hidden weapon. It only prevents the most dangerous people from obtaining permits. People convicted of assault and harassment aren't prevented. Same with someone with mental illness if they haven't been committed to a mental institution. This law is not what we've been told by these people. I pray it doesn't pass.

ALERT: IAJack, the founder of IACarry****, put out a request to his gun lobby members across IA, MN, MO, and IL on 3/24/08 to "HIT THIS POLL." He mass e-mailed all his members. In terms of the normal Estherville Daily News readers, IAJack has made the poll a farce; he stacked the deck with hard core outside supporters. His members, Reedie and Hokahay, then wrote letters to legislators citing the pole. This is an example of the tyranny of the .5% minority who are misrepresenting this bill.

The education & competancy course for counties surrounding Emmet that offer right to carry permits is given at Iowa Lakes Community College in Estherville, Emmet County, Iowa. If, according to the Emmet County Sheriff's office this is dangerous to the officers and citizens of Emmet County, why is the community college offering the course? Not45Special

Yeah a CWP really deterred the person robbing the delivery driver from carrying huh. Read the story ***********desmoinesregister****/apps/pbcs.dll/article?AID=/20080328/NEWS/80328005#gslPageReturn The delivery guy took or knocked the robbers gun away before shooting him. A CWP is not valid in the comission of a crime so it wouldnt matter if the robber had one or not!

Yes if the person being robbed had a cwp the headline would read " two people dead in robbery " Good point!

Wow lets leave this poll up here until the opposition calls enough people to make a gain. What is the percentage of increase per day against this like 1%? Maybe the sheriff is driving around looking for other computers to respond from.

In the meantime check out the Des Moines Register today about the overnight Pizza Delivery attempted robbery. If it is as appears then this is exactly why a permit is a good idea. BTW the Delivery mans Polk Co license to carry would also be valid in Emmet Co.

Deputy Martens says he will not issue any new permits. What is he going to do with the 45 plus already out there? Will he deny renewals, or go with the good ole boy stance and renew 20 plus year old permits. Holders that never had to qaulify on the range. Seems to me that these permit holders have the most to lose in this election. Go to the sheriff and asked for a list of permits renewed, GET THE CURRENT LIST. Look it over and ask yourself why they have one and you will be denied. Then at election time vote for one of the canidates that TRUST YOU!

Another thing: Please read the bill, people! Specifically, read proposed section 724.8 and see just exactly what it says. Does this sound like the sheriff has the ability to restrict permits when it's necessary to protect the safety of his citizens? Reading the bill is a good start and it would be good for the sheriff and first deputy to give it a try.

What character flaw is within the people of Emmit County which makes them subject to behaviors that are not exhibited in 40 other states and about half the counties in Iowa? Think about it. In the face of the irrefutable fact that this does not happen elsewhere, the sheriff and first deputy think Esterville will have blood running in the streets, road rage will turn to murder, and guns will create general murder and mayhem in otherwise peaceful citizens. Doesn't this speak to an opinion on character. These are old and worn out cliches that just don't hold water anymore. This isn't new ground. Let's pass HF 2613 and stop this nonsense.

If the sheriff and deputy are so strong against people having permits, why does the sheriff renew 45 each year? He says ecause they had them when he came into office. So if is OK for those 45 to br trusted, but no one else. Deputy Martens says he doesn't think we are ready for this. So what does that mean? Are we less of a person than those in 42 other states that have passed a law much like this bill? Is he saying there are only 45 people in the county that can be trusted? Take a few minutes and visit the sheriff'f office and ask for a current list of the permits he issues and renews. Look the list over and ask yourself why them and not me?
