It was a bittersweet time for Estherville chamber members Friday when they said good-bye to outgoing executive director Renee Stowell and welcomed new executive director Stephanie Neppl, virtually hours before Stowell joined her husband, Eric, who left earlier Friday for a job position in the La Crosse, Wis. area.
Neppl, an Estherville native, received her degree in journalism and English from Briar Cliff and her master's in mass communication from Drake University.
A former Daily New employee, Neppl was teaching English in South Korea before moving to New Zealand where she spent the last eight years before returning to Estherville. Her last position was with Tennis Auckland where she was social media manager. Neppl worked in events tourism her entire time in New Zealand.

"I've managed a lot of Websites and managed media relations through those jobs," Neppl said. As she contemplated her new duties as chamber manager, said Neppl, "There's a lot of similarities to what I did."
Neppl fondly remembers the winter sports festival in Estherville and thinks the community is lucky to have the west fork of the Des Moines River and parks.
"I think that there's a lot of really good projects in Estherville," said Neppl. "It's good to see a town that isn't just sitting there."
"There's so much community effort that went into things like Excel and the branding effort," Stowell agreed.
