ELC places fifth overall

LEMARS - Despite having no wrestlers in four weights, Estherville Lincoln Central did very well individually at the 2013 Lakes Conference Tournament on Friday.

The Midgets placed four wrestlers in the finals and came away with two champions in Oscar Ramirez (132) and Billy Snyder (152).

Blake Gjerde (145) and Chase Bonner (220) both finished second while Cole Budach (120) and Grant Lausen (160) both placed sixth. Thomas Bortvit (138) and Jake Bortvit (170) both placed fifth and Easton Gifford (106) placed sixth.

Overall, ELC placed fifth with 135.5 points

Ramirez, undefeated and ranked fourth at 126 pounds in Class 2A, defeated Storm Lake's Juan Figueroa with an 8-0 major decision in the semifinals. In the finals, he pinned Spencer's Levi Gilmore, ranked seventh in 2A, in 3 minutes, 30 seconds.

Snyder opened the tournament by pinning Spencer's Jacob Sandvig in 4:56 and he then won by technical fall over Spirit Lake Park's Boston Swan, 15-0. In the finals, he won a 7-2 decision over LeMars' Juan Hernandez.

Gjerde pinned Storm Lake's Kyle Wiegert in 2:49 in the semifinals, but then lost a 5-4 decision to Spirit Lake Parks' Kenten Murray in the finals.

Bonner pinned LeMars' Alex Hermes in 5:25, but then lost to Emmetsburg's Tayler Wegner, ranked eighth in Class 1A, in 1:28.

After losing a 6-0 decision to LeMars' Tyler Carlson in the quarterfinals, Budach pinned Emmetsburg's Jake Miller in 2:51 in the consolation semifinals, but lost the third place match 7-3 to LeMars' Tyler Carlson.

Lausen lot his semifinal match by fall to Spencer's Tanner Schaefer, ranked fourth. He pinned LeMars' Chris Hammann in 5:59 in the consolation semifinals, but then lost by fall to Cherokee's Luke Zeimen in the third-place match.

Thomas Bortvit went 2-2 on the night, beating Emmetsburg's Chris Van Huevelen 8-1 in the consolation first round and then pinning Storm Lake's Juan Morales in the fifthplace match in 5:24.

Jake Bortvit opened the night by pinning LeMars' Kyle Williams in 1:38 in the quarterfinal, but then lost in the semifinal and consolation semifinal. In the fifth-place match, he defeated Williams again, this time with an 8-4 decision.

Gifford opened the night with a key 6-4 decision over Emmetsburg's Dillon Van Oosbree, but then lost his next three matches by fall.

Spencer, ranked ninth in Class 2A, won the conference meet with 241.5 points. Spirit Lake Park, ranked 10th place second with 178.85 points followed by LeMars with 173. Emmetsburg, ranked second in Class 1A, placed fourth with 153 points, followed by ELC and then Cherokee with 127 points, Storm Lake with 115.5 and Western Christian with 74.

ELC travels to Cherokee next Saturday for the Class 2A Sectional Meet in Cherokee.
