The Special Olympics North Stars 3-on-3 basketball team participated in the West Central Conference tournament on Feb. 9, 2013 at Drake University in Des Moines.
The North Stars participated in the Senior Developmental Division I class with four other teams.
The tournament featured a double-elimination format with a 20-minute game limit or a 20-point limit-which ever came first.
The North Starts opened by beating Christian Opportunity Center Spiritfires 20-2, a game, which lasted less than 10 minutes.
The North Stars' second name was a little more challenging against the Woodward Resource Center, but the Estherville team still won 20-12.
In game three, the North Stars won 20-8 against the Link Associate Hornets.
In the fourth and final game, the North Stars played Woodward again and came out on top 18-8.
This gives the North Stars the opportunity to attend the state basketball tournament in March. This is the fifth consecutive year the North Stars have won the conference. They have won the state competition the past four years.
Members of the North Stars are Ryan Foster, Mack Torres, Ryan Williams, Todd West and Josh Karns. Each received a blue ribbon. The team is coached by Paul Moffitt and assisted by Steve Williams.
The North Starts along with the basketball skills, powerlifting and cheerleading athletes advance to the Mid-Winter Tournament State games to be held March 16 at the University of Iowa in Iowa City.
The athletes and volunteer coaches are selling quilt raffle tickets for a quilt.
The winner will be drawn at the group's baked potato bar on April 21 at the Duhigg Center.
The queen-sized quilt has been donated by Mary Hart and the Wooden Thimble. Tickets sell for $1 or six for $5 and are available at the Estherville Parks and Recreation Office.
