ALGONA - Funeral services for Vivian Betels, formerly of Estherville, will be held on Wednesday, March, 6, 2013, at Oakcrest Funeral Services in Algona. There will be visitation one hour prior to the services on Wednesday at the funeral home.
Vivian Louise Betels was born July 10, 1916, in Lakota, Iowa, the daughter of John and Essie (Rickford) Pink. At a young age her family moved to Buffalo Center where she attended school and graduated from Buffalo Center High School. She went on to attend Iowa State Teachers College in Cedar Falls, where she received her teaching certificate. She began to teach and later did teach with her sister in the Algona area.
On Feb. 3, 1946, Vivian was united in marriage to A.J."Ted" Betels in Armstrong. After their marriage they lived and farmed in the Buffalo Center area. In 1954, they moved to a farm northwest of Estherville. Once their daughter was in school, Vivian returned to teaching and taught in the Estherville schools until retiring in 1981.
She enjoyed reading, writing letters, crocheting, cross-stitch, quilting, playing cards and working crossword puzzles. Vivian enjoyed being with her husband and family. They enjoyed the summer theater in Okoboji, eating out often and traveling, especially their trips to the Black Hills. She was a loving, generous and devoted wife, mother, grandmother and great-grandmother.
Vivian was a past member of the First Presbyterian Church in Estherville, where she taught Sunday School for many years. She also enjoyed the Friday Afternoon Teachers Coffee Group.
Vivian died Tuesday, Feb. 26, 2013, at the Algona Manor Care Center. She was 96.
She is survived by her daughter, Dorothy Meehan of Cherokee; grandson, Paul Yarns of St. Louis, Mo.; granddaughter, Sarah and Bryce Richter of Cherokee; great-granddaughters, Brynn and Keira Richter; sister, Helen Odgaard of Algona; brother, David and Barbara Pink of The Dalles, Ore., and nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by her parents; husband, A.J. Betels on Nov. 19, 2002; sister, Dorothy Zager; son-in-law, Donovan Meehan and brother-in-law, Art Odgaard.
