EMMETSBURG - The weekend to be Irish is rapidly approaching and a sure sign of the annual celebration of Emmetsburg's Irish heritage is the announcement of the contestants for the Annual Miss Shamrock Pageant. The 51st Annual Miss Shamrock Pageant is set for Friday, March 16, at 7 p.m. in the Emmetsburg High School Auditorium. A field of six area young women will take to the stage to vie for the coveted Miss Shamrock title.
Miss Shamrock 2012, Paige Naig, will crown her successor at the conclusion of the evening's program. Kevin Tlam of Lite 104.9 in Spencer will serve as the Master of Ceremonies for the evening. Special guests for the2013 pageant will be the Celtic Dancers from Iowa State University in Ames, who will provide special entertainment during the evening's program.
Competition in the Miss Shamrock Pageant includes an interview with the panel of judges prior to the evening program and then on-stage introduction in casual wear, a talent performance of the contestant's choice, an appearance in formal wear and an on-stage question.
Here is a look at the field of contestants for Miss Shamrock 2013.
Sarah Mader is an 18-year old senior at West Bend-Mallard Community High School. The daughter of Ron and Mary Mader of Mallard, Sarah has two brothers, Nathan and Greg. At West Bend-Mallard, Sarah is a member of the National Honor Society. She is also active in softball, basketball, golf, track, choir, student council, football statistician and PaceSetters, as well as serving as junior class secretary-treasurer. Sarah earned fifth place in Dance Solo at the Iowa State Dance competition as a junior. Sarah is a member of the Fern Valley 4-H'ers where she has earned numerous awards and honors, including a Judges' Choice Award for Visual Arts and the Iowa State Fair. She also participates on the Quad County Pride Softball team, is a lifeguard and teaches swimming lessons and is active in CCD and is an Altar Server at St. Mary's Catholic Church in Mallard.
In her spare time, Sarah enjoys art, fashion, dance and sports, as well as hanging out with friends. Sarah also has visited New York City for Fashion Study and has been offered an internship with Nanette Lapore. Sarah plans to attend Iowa State University and earn a degree in Fashion Design and Merchandising.
In the talent portion of the pageant, Sarah will perform a Dance solo by Kimbra, entitled "Settle Down".
Mercedes DePue is a 17-year old junior at Emmetsburg High School and is the daughter of Brian DePue and Mary Lilly of Emmetsburg. Mercedes participates in community service activities, and recently took part in a community service event that included painting, home repairs and gardening. Her hobbies including singing, drawing, reading and painting.
Mercedes plans to attend Iowa Lakes Community College and then transfer to Waldorf to study preschool education and art.
For her talent selection, Mercedes will present a vocal selection, "Halo."
Casey Sievert is an 18-year old senior at the Estherville Lincoln Central Community High School. The daughter of Jeff and Jen Sievert of Estherville, Casey has a twin sister Allie and a brother Dylan. At ELC, Casey is a member of the National Honor Society and "A" Honor Roll and was an Academic All State honoree for Volleyball, as well as Academic All Conference Volleyball honoree and Student of the Month for Math and Advanced Placement Literature. Casey is a four-year letter winner in volleyball and basketball and a three-year State Track qualifier. She has received All Conference honors for basketball track and Volleyball and is Student Council President and an ELC Site Council member.
In the community, Casey is a Vacation Bible School instructor, winner of the Rotary Service Above Self Award and has received Purple Cord honors for Community Service.
Casey plans to attend Iowa State University to major in Biology to prepare for Med School or to obtain a Masters in Psychology.
For the talent competition, Casey will present a Clog routine to the selection, "Daddy's Money".
Amber Ellis is a 17-year old senior at Spencer High School. The daughter of Lance and Cyndi Ellis of Spencer has a sister Autumn and brother Kenzer. At Spencer High School, Amber is a member of the National Honor Society and four-year Honor Roll honoree. She has received Division One ratings at Solo and Ensemble music contests all four years in high school.
In the community, Amber is the Youth Group Leadership Team President at Bethany Lutheran Church and she has served as a volunteer for the "Love Spencer" Community Service event. Amber's hobbies include singing, playing the piano, playing the clarinet and reading works by F. Scott Fitzgerald.
Amber plans are to attend a four-year college in pursuit of a degree in Math or Education.
Amber will present the vocal selection "Don't' Rain On My Parade" from the musical "Funny Girl." for her talent selection.
Jenna Wolfe is a 17-year old junior at Emmetsburg Community High School. The daughter of Jesse and Janice Wolfe of Emmetsburg, Jenna has a sister, Jean and two brothers, Jesse and Josh. At Emmetsburg, Jenna is an Academic Letter Winner and a World Food Prize Scholar from Iowa State University, as well as earning a recommendation to attend the National Youth Leadership Forum on Medicine. She is also a member of the Emmetsburg Varsity Cheer squad and High Voltage Show Choir, as well as the EHS Concert Choir.
In the community, Jenna is a Palo Alto County Junior Delegate and her hobbies include playing the piano, baking, dancing and spending time with her family and friends.
Jenna plans to attend Iowa State University to earn a double major in Business Accounting/Finance and Interior Design.
In the talent portion of the pageant, Jenna will perform a pom dance routine.
Hannah Bird is a 17-year old junior at Emmetsburg Community High School. The daughter of Rick and Julie Bird of Emmetsburg, Hannah has a younger brother, Spencer. At Emmetsburg, Hannah carries a grade point average of 3.10 and is involved in softball, cheerleading and vocal music, where she is a member of the Concert Choir, High Voltage Show Choir and was the female lead in the 2012 musical "Hairspray."
In the community, Hannah is a song leader for Mass at Holy Family Parish, where she also assists with the Totus Tuus Program. She also volunteers with the Relay For Life Program. Hannah has also auditioned for FOX TV's "American Idol" program.
Hannah's future plans are to attend college to obtain a degree as a Dietician or Nutritionist.
